Rhee Gold’s Big I.D.E.A!!!
On July 30th, 2016 Rhee Gold will launch the first ever International Business Conference for Studio Owners and Administrators called I.D.E.A.
The International Dance Educators Association (I.D.E.A.) is a conference designed to equip studio owners with new knowledge and tools to achieve and maximize their business potential. This inspiring, one of kind event, will take place at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale, AZ.
Rhee Gold is approaching 20 years as an Educator’s Educator. For years, he has been bringing dance teachers together for the common good. He has created Project Motivate, Dance Studio Life Magazine, The Dance Life Teacher Conference and the Dance Life Retreat Center. He has single handedly bridged the gap between a once highly competitive industry and opened the door for conversation and progress. Many others try to do what he does, but no one does it like Rhee Gold!
Rhee’s positive influence and global impact on our community, has helped dance evolve and thrive! And he’s not done. According to Rhee, there is still more to do!!!
So it’s no surprise that Rhee is launching the I.D.E.A Conference. If you have ever attended one of Rhee’s workshops, you leave feeling inspired and you walk away a better teacher and a better business person. And the I.D.E.A Conference is taking business business education to a whole new level!
What makes Rhee’s approach so special is the undertone of all of his work is that dance can make a difference. “We are MENTORS, TEACHERS and LEADERS, in that order”. And Rhee wants dance studios to succeed, because the success of one teacher leaves a lasting impression on future generations. It cannot be measured in a trophy or an award. It’s impact reaches far beyond our comprehension.
WHY DID YOU CREATE THE I.D.E.A. CONFERENCE?
I wanted to do the I.D.E.A. Conference because I feel it’s time for school owners to come together to be smarter at operating their businesses, so they can enjoy it more. It was the natural flow of seminars that I have presented in the past. It’s the next progression of business education. This is the pinnacle for me. Everything has led to this.
HOW IS THE IDEA CONFERENCE DIFFERENT?
The I.D.E.A. Conference will be hands on with business owners and training. Instead of sharing ideasand taking notes, they are going to go home with some of the work and concepts already completed. They can immediately put it into effect things that will help their business flourish. Creating a mission statement, defining the culture and philosophy for your studio, and role playing will all be a part of the hands-on training.
In addition, vendors who offer curriculums for all age levels, will be able to have the opportunity to present their material to the school owners in personal setting.
There will also be live presentations of software (studio software, online registration, ticketing software, etc) so school owners can see what the programs can do. It’s a way for the studio owners to get comfortable with the technology available to them. The reality is many new or younger generation studios are taking in 50-70% of their students using online registration. It makes life much easier. I’d like the owners to be more open to technology.
One of the things I’ve discovered, is when you work against the natural flow of things, you have less time. These technological advances give the owners more time to grow the business, rather than manually doing all the work.
WHAT ARE YOUR STRATEGIES FOR BRANDING AND GROWING A BUSINESS?
I think that school owners need to take the creativity that they use when creating a piece of choreography or create a show, and use their creativity into growing their business. They don’t always associate the two. If you are really creative at putting on a show, you would probably be really great at creating a website that would be really good for your business, or creating new summer camps, or specialty programs for your school.
My goal is that the owners immerse their creativity into the business side, and they go home with the tools to grow. Our brainstorming sessions will do just that.
WHAT ARE THE BREAK OUT SESSIONS FOR STUDIO OWNERS?
When we do the Dance Life Teacher Conference, we have all levels of ownership. We have new school owners or “Newbies” that have been in business 1-9 years. They have different needs than the “Seasoned” teachers that have been in business 10-24 years. And there are the “Veteran” teachers that have been in business more than 25 years. These “Veterans” may be trying to figure out how to step away from the business, or how to prepare for retirement. So we are breaking owners into groups to discuss the particular issues that affect them as their milestones approach.
We are also going to break them up by regions because studios from the Midwest or East Coast have different issues from the Southwest part of the country. And studios in Canada have different issues then studios in the United States.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE ENTIRE I.D.E.A. CONFERENCE IS BUILT AROUND A “HANDS ON” ATMOSPHERE.
You got it! And I have put together a group speakers that have a lot of diversity in the size of their schools and a lot of diversity in what their objectives are. Some are competitive school owners, some non-competitive, and those who do both. I meet with the IDEA Conference faculty regularly. We discuss the issues owners face and what we think teachers need. They have some amazing ideas and we can’t wait to share.
WHEN YOU STARTED WITH PROJECT MOTIVATE 20 YEARS AGO, PEOPLE PROBABLY THOUGHT YOUR WERE CRAZY ASKING STUDIO OWNERS TO SIT IN A ROOM TOGETHER AND DISCUSS THEIR PRIVATE BUSINESS PRACTICES. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE YOU BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL?
Because I love what I do. My parents put their heart into everything, and I didn’t know any other way of doing it. My heart is in this business. I think that’s the key to success. There are many teachers that come into the dance industry to “achieve” something whether it be winning awards or being recognized as the best choreographer and they will eventually burn out. In their quest for recognition, they might miss the opportunity to help the little girl in the back of the room wearing the smelly leotard that needs attention. Reaching that child is true success. We CAN make a difference in every one of our students. That’s why it’s important to me that dance studios succeed. And everyday, I just keep working on doing good things for the business of dance.
