RHEE GOLD’S BIG I.D.E.A!!!
The International Dance Entrepreneurs Association (I.D.E.A.) is an organization designed to equip studio owners with new knowledge and tools to achieve and maximize their business potential.
Rhee Gold is celebrating 20+ years as an Educator’s Educator. For years, he has been bringing dance teachers together for the common good. He has created Project Motivate, Dance Studio Life Magazine, The DanceLife Teacher Conference and the DanceLife Retreat Center. He has single handedly bridged the gap between a once highly competitive industry and opened the door for conversation and progress. Many others try to do what he does, but no one does it like Rhee Gold!
Rhee’s positive influence and global impact on our community, has helped dance evolve and thrive! And he’s not done. According to Rhee, there is still more to do!!!
So it’s no surprise that when Rhee launched the first I.D.E.A. Conference in Scottsdale, AZ it was such a success. If you have ever attended one of Rhee’s workshops, you know you leave feeling inspired and walk away a better teacher and a better business person.
What makes Rhee’s approach so special is the undertone to all of his work that dance can make a difference. “We are MENTORS, TEACHERS and LEADERS, in that order”. Rhee wants dance studios to succeed, because the success of one teacher leaves a lasting impression on future generations. It cannot be measured in a trophy or an award. Its impact reaches far beyond our comprehension.
WHY DID YOU CREATE THE I.D.E.A. ORGANIZATION?
I have wanted to bring together studio owners in a unique way for many years now. I.D.E.A. was launched because I felt it was the right time for school owners to come together to be smarter at operating their businesses, so they can enjoy it more. It was the natural flow of seminars that I have presented in the past. It’s the next progression of business education. This is the pinnacle for me. Everything has led to this.
HOW IS THE I.D.E.A. DIFFERENT?
I.D.E.A. is focused entirely on the dance school owner. We, and all of our members, are committed to a Code of Ethics that guides the practices of our members’ studios in all that they do. This recognition that we can work together, share ideas, support one another and still be successful in our own schools, even if they are right across the street from each other, is revolutionary. Having a successful studio does not mean degrading others in the business; quite the opposite. We can learn from others’ successes and share in the belief that if we support one another in the unique challenges we face as both studio owners and dance educators, then we are successful, not only now, but in setting up a legacy of passing on the gift of dance to future generations.
WHAT ARE YOUR STRATEGIES FOR BRANDING AND GROWING A BUSINESS?
I think that school owners need to take the creativity that they use when creating a piece of choreography or create a show, and use their creativity into growing their business. They don’t always associate the two. If you are really creative at putting on a show, you would probably be really great at creating a website that would be really good for your business, or creating new summer camps, or specialty programs for your school.
My goal is that the owners immerse their creativity into the business side, and they go home with the tools to grow. Our brainstorming sessions will do just that.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SESSIONS LIKE AT THIS I.D.E.A DANCE TEACHER CONFERENCE IN ORLANDO?
We are covering everything a dance studio owner could need to have a well-trained office staff and faculty. In addition, of course, we are offering business seminars for the studio owners themselves so that, if desired, an owner could bring all their employees and know that this investment is going to great use for the future success of their school. The conference schedule has been enhanced to offer even more for the office manager. There will be an office manager handbook presented along with training on how to use and customize this handbook. In addition, teaching faculty will engage with movement classes, classroom strategies and demos, along with choreography workshops to bring back fresh ideas to the studio for immediate implementation.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE IS BUILT AROUND THE WHOLE STUDIO?
You got it! And I have put together a group of speakers that have a lot of diversity in the size of their schools and a lot of diversity in what their objectives are. Some are competitive school owners, some non-competitive, and those who do both. I meet with the presenters regularly to discuss the issues owners face and what we think teachers need. They have some innovative ideas, and we can’t wait to share.
WHEN YOU STARTED WITH PROJECT MOTIVATE 20 YEARS AGO, PEOPLE PROBABLY THOUGHT YOUR WERE CRAZY ASKING STUDIO OWNERS TO SIT IN A ROOM TOGETHER AND DISCUSS THEIR PRIVATE BUSINESS PRACTICES. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE YOU BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL?
Because I love what I do. My parents put their heart into everything, and I didn’t know any other way of doing it. My heart is in this business. I think that’s the key to success. There are many teachers that come into the dance industry to “achieve” something whether it be winning awards or being recognized as the best choreographer and they will eventually burn out. In their quest for recognition, they might miss the opportunity to help the little girl in the back of the room wearing the smelly leotard that needs attention. Reaching that child is true success. We CAN make a difference in every one of our students. That’s why it’s important to me that dance studios succeed. And every day, I just keep working on doing good things for the business of dance.
